A. Brazil beef exports- Currently the US prohibits imports of fresh Brazilian Beef from most parts of the country because of concerns about Foot – and Mouth diseases (FMD). Recently the U.S Department of Agriculture indicated it is considering lifting this ban for designated regions in Brazil. There is strong opposition to this in the U.S but it is still under consideration. The likelihood of success would increase if Brazilian exporters and their U.S. importers submit comments to the USD. The following are regions in Brazil that are being considered for permission to export fresh (chilled or frozen) beef: Bahia, Distrito Federal, Espirito Santo, Goiás, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Minas Gerais, Paraná, Rio Grande do Sul, Rio de Janeiro, Rondônia, São Paulo, Sergipe, and Tocantins.
B. Generalized System of Preferences – GSP – for many years Brazilian exports to the US of many products were duty free under this GSP program.
The program expired in July 2013 and has not been renewed. Lobbying efforts are needed by Brazilian exporter and their U.S importers to get this jump started and resume duty free benefits. This could mean a lot of money for Brazilian exporters because if the program is renewed retroactively they could receive a refund of all the duties paid since July 2013.
